What are Part G Water Calculations?
As part of the Governments initiative to reduce the demand on fresh water in a home they cam up with Part G of Building Regulations, Part G is designed to limit the amount of drinking quality water that is used in a new home
, there are several criteria depending on local planning conditions. The requirements are as follows, although initially designed to work in conjunction with The Code for Sustainable Homes which is now no longer a requirement for new homes.
Current UK Building Regulations
Current UK Building Regulations has a requirement of no more than 125 litres of water per person per day, this is not so difficult to achieve, the calculations are based on the number of bedrooms in a property, the software then automatically calculates average occupancy rates, by using aerated flow products throughout the property such as aerated taps, aerated showers etc: a pass can be easily achieved, one of the main issues in gaining compliance is where the client has specified lots of baths throughout the dwelling, the fill level to the overflow is the figure used in the calculations, this can create problems for clients as often baths are installed as a furnishing to set off a bathroom, but with the levels required for Part G the overflow has to be around the middle of the bath, meaning that when used the maximum water that can be run into the bath leaves it at about half way full, not very aesthetically pleasing. Ideally one bath in a dwelling is usually OK, the only method to getting the calculations to work is by rain water or grey water recycling, often clients complain about the discolouring of toilet bowls when using rainwater or grey water, another thing to remember when opting for rain water harvesting or grey water recycling.
At Build Compliance Ltd we work hard to ensure the smooth transition through the various elements of Building Regulations, we work for our clients, we only specify or suggest items for installation based on cost, our cost first approach means we can usually find a cost effective method through compliance for the majority of our clients. If we can not find a cost effective solution we discuss what other options may be available and of course their effectiveness. Once our clients have agreed to the options they would like to use we will provide the finished calculations based on this.
